HGV Annual Test (DVSA)

Annual testing — prepared, tested, and passed

Every HGV over 3,500kg must pass an annual test — the heavy vehicle equivalent of an MOT, but considerably more thorough. Failing the annual test doesn’t just mean a repair bill; it means a vehicle that can’t legally operate until it passes, which means lost revenue for every day it sits idle.

What the annual test covers

The DVSA annual test examines braking performance (including a roller brake test), steering, suspension, wheels and tyres, chassis and body condition, exhaust emissions, lights and electrical equipment, coupling devices (for tractor units), and any specific requirements for the vehicle class. The standards are significantly stricter than a car MOT — items that would pass on a car will fail on an HGV.

Laden brake testing

From 2025, the DVSA now requires laden brake tests on HGVs as part of the annual test. This means the vehicle must be loaded (or simulated to loaded weight) to verify braking performance meets the required standards. Our workshop has the roller brake testing equipment to carry out these tests to DVSA specifications.

Pre-test preparation

We strongly recommend a pre-test inspection before the annual test date. This gives us the opportunity to identify and rectify any issues in advance — so the vehicle goes into the test right, rather than failing and needing a retest. It’s cheaper and faster to fix problems before the test than after.

Trailers too

Trailers over 3,500kg also need annual testing. We can test your trailers at the same time as your tractor units — one visit, everything covered.
